Whereabouts
Somewhere in the UK is today's mystery town. You have six guesses. Each one tells you how far off you are and which way to go, and unlocks a clue.
How it works
Each day's town is one of about 240 of the UK's cities and larger towns. Practice draws from about 560 towns of 15,000 people or more; London's boroughs are left out of both. You can guess any of about 3,000 towns. After each guess you see the straight-line distance, the direction to the mystery town and how close you are, from 0% at 1,000 km to 100%. Every wrong guess unlocks the next clue: size, sunshine and rain, house prices and the Leave vote in its council area, the oddest thing about its council area, its county, and finally its first letter. Everyone gets the same town each day; Practice gives you a random one whenever you like.
The clues use the same data as Higher or Lower: ONS and Nomis statistics, Met Office climate averages for 1991 to 2020, Electoral Commission results and counts from my own studies. Name meanings are the usual explanations of common place-name elements, and many names have more than one theory.
