Where the numbers come from

Every place is a council (local authority district or unitary authority) as it stood in April 2023, so merged councils such as North Yorkshire and Somerset count as one. The figures are the latest official ones for each council. Census measures cover England and Wales, so Scottish and Northern Irish councils only meet questions that cover them. The City of London and the Isles of Scilly are left out because they are so small. Pairs that are too close to call are never asked. The questions marked Just for fun mix official counts (the census, UK Business Counts) with data from my own studies, such as Victorian post boxes, church bells, earthquakes and haunted places; those count what has been recorded, so they also reflect how keen the local mappers are.
