Where the numbers come from
The places are the world's 196 sovereign countries (the 193 UN members plus Kosovo, Taiwan and Vatican City). Figures are the latest I could find for each, mostly from the CIA World Factbook, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization via Our World in Data, UNESCO, the US Geological Survey and Wikipedia's lists. Not every country has every figure, so each question only uses countries that have one, and pairs that are too close to call are never asked. Some figures are estimates, some are years old, and the Just for fun counts measure what has been recorded, so take them with a pinch of salt. Want the UK version?
